John Tarbox
Director of Musicr

John is a native Californian, and came to San Diego in 1991. He currently lives in Talmadge with Dean, his partner since 1997 and their cat, Mr. KG. He also has two adult children. Brittany resides in American Fork, Utah, where she is studying to work in a Medical Office. His youngest, Meredith, lives in Norwalk, California and her main ambition in life is to become a Japanese Anime artist.

John has been involved with Kensington Community Church since 1997 years, first as the tenor section leader and later, as Choir Director. He has produced several half-hour musical reviews for the KCC sponsored Senior Luncheons; selecting music and even stitching costumes for the artists in the programs.

Music has always been a part of his life coming from a very musical family; his father, Russ, sang with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and passed on his singing to his children. Although, with seven children in the family, they could never be considered in the same light as the von Trapp family singers, but were often called upon to sing at church and many other social activities. This gave John the firm grounding in music as he started his studies; first, earning his AAS in music from Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho and then his BA in Music, Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Light Opera and Musical Theater from California State University, San Bernardino. He currently sings with the San Diego Master Chorale, serving as the chair of the Singer’s Council.

John's hobbies include costuming, sewing, and the fabric arts. Although he is handy with almost anything that can be made with a needle, he prefers to crochet or sew. His talents have been used to create tablecloths and quilts for the past few years as part of the Annual KCC Dinner Auction Benefit. Many people in the congregation have one of the 30 small quilts that he had sewn and quilted for the 2006 “American Lodge” event. He is often seen around the San Diego Transit system with a crochet project in his hands.
